In The Mountains—AFTERNOON
Our crashed crew van is upside down, but I hide from the bears in the cab nonetheless. The rest of the crew is hiding elsewhere.
Fuck them.
One of the girls, Iris, I can see is heedless of the danger and strutting around in a thong looking for a place to sun herself. I wonder if I am hidden well enough to stroke one out while watching.
But soon Sailor Lou and Mary and the others are banging on the side of the van trying to rouse me. I climb out.
Mary proposes a few of us make an excursion to the nearby hospital to get blood and milk for the baby deer she has just adopted. I scoff at this.
“Basically,” Mary entreats me, “We realize now that you are the closest thing to a warrior and leader we have.”
I groan. Once again they only care about me when they need help. “It is too late in the afternoon and a fog is rolling in,” I tell them, “You should wait till morning. I head back to my hiding spot along in the van wondering if there is a better spot or if there is safety in numbers. Sailor Lou looks heartbroken.
“So, you don’t want to be part of the crew anymore?”
I don’t know how to answer.
“This baby will die by then,” Mary declares, “I am going anyway.” Several agree. I know they will all die. The guilt trip works.
“Okay, fine. I’ll lead the way.” ”I tell them “Just get me some weapons. Lots of them.”
