Back In School—DAY
I am helping out at my work-study job. It’s a lot of copying and filing based on the unique department system: each professor has a small green rubber stamp or two with different stars and shapes indicating for who and what my task is. The department secretaries shove a stack documents at me and scram. When they leave, some students come into the office to lounge and chat. And I let them, although I am not really included in the conversation. Freshmen.
But I catch sight of at least one cute girl in the bunch. A redhead.
My friend Anna Feng has stopped by to see me. The redhead is a friend she brings in tow. I can sense the redhead as she sits behind me and bats her eyes flirtatiously. I think. The back of my head is very keen on these things, as my third eye grows increasingly exposed by my starting to thin hair.
Now I wish I had gotten a better look at the girl with my regular eyes. Anna is displeased, but she had her chance with me already and missed out. Soon the girl is running her fingers in my hair from behind. The ever thick and curly one at the nape of my neck.
“Isn’t this nice?’ she coos, “How handsome you are.”
I spot Spike poking around in the halls; I decide to close up the department office for the day. My watch puts the time at 3:50, but a peek at the clock outside in the hall, puts the time closer to 4 pm on a Friday. Time to get fucked up.
“No one has ever said these things to me before.” I tell the redhead, “But I am driving off campus, shortly, and so—”
“Can you to take me back to the student union?” she asks.
“Anything for a beautiful woman,” I say and know it is her turn to say no one has ever told her these things before either. Anna Feng groans and steps in, pushing me back against the water cooler which spills out a bit, but it is Okay.
“Come on, Iris.” Anna growls, grabbing the girl by the arm pulling her out and down the hall.
So I scoot the lingering students out too.
Leaving with Spike, I am accosted by the Dean.
“It’s barely four,” he sputters, “why are you locking up early?’ I was told to close up shop by 4 pm,” I explain, “I looked out the office window glass to see the clock across the hall. It’s a nice glass window. It’s made by...” I ramble on for some reason about non-relevant details. The Dean is not appeased but I trail off, shrug and walk past him anyway. Though it is a somewhat pleasant job, it isn’t worth keeping if I have to put up with such hassles.
Spike, once cavorting behind, has disappeared while I was talking with the Dean. No matter. It’s the weekend,
I run through the department, east and west wings, sliding on my shoes around each corner, and sliding back into my department’s territory and into a bunch of grad students waiting to start a class.
I stop short and stare in disbelief: Spike is there with Andrea. We are all forced to make small talk and pretend to not be surprised to see each other.
Andrea is wearing a silky gown and her stomach, just a little bloated, now growls. No one acknowledges the noise.
In order to at least have some upper hand over the situation, I make it clear that I am a Senior here now, ready to start a career. But it is not necessary. Andrea seems to mostly ignore Spike floating behind. She has him now seemingly kept around as some eunuch handmaiden, and I am happy to see another man, especially one I secretly hate, in this position. How can she keep that old demon Spike at bay? I never could!
Andrea talks and lounges like some society diva, not the crazy girl I know. She’s hanging on me as she vamps, and I am at once again off-put, because it was her innocent funniness that attracts me, but also still pleased at Spike’s cuckolded position.
Meanwhile, someone is setting up a snack table for a Friday evening guest lecture. I am fascinated as a craft services waiter slices and stacks gelatin squares into a pleasing arrangement.
Her stomach growls more and more, until it is unbearable as she rubs her belly against me. Then, she laughs and rubs her stomach: she has a device under her dress making the noise (and also making her appear a little fat). She hugs and laughs thinking it was a great joke to make me ignore the awful grumbling for the sake of being rude.
I don’t participate in the discussion. I am still mesmerized by the jello.
